Sergio Pagano

Sergio Pagano CRSP ( born November 6, 1948 in Genoa ) is an Curia Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. Since 1997 he is Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives.

Life

Sergio Pagano joined in 1966 the Congregation of the Barnabites at. he studied theology and philosophy in Rome and put the profession on October 19, 1975. The former bishop of Novara, Placido Maria Cambiaghi CRSP, donated him on 28 May 1978, the ordination. After his theological doctorate degree with a specialization in liturgy he graduated in 1978 as palaeografischer archivist at the School of paleography, diplomatics and archives of the Vatican. He was then in the Secret Archives of the Vatican operates.

Sergio Pagano is since 1978 Professor of archives at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, Academician of the Accademia di San Carlo Borromeo and member of the International Council on Archives. Pope John Paul II appointed him as a consultant to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints (1985) and the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church (1997). From 1989 to 2001 he was Director of the Centre for Historical Studies of Barnabites in Rome.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 30 January 1995 as Vice- Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives and shortly thereafter became the rector of the Vatican school of paleography, diplomatics and archives.

On 7 January 1997, the appointment as prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives was made. Sergio Pagano was a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences. 2000 was admitted as a Corresponding Member in the Monumenta Historica Germaniae and the Società Romana di Storia Patria in Rome. He became an honorary member of the Associazione Italiana per lo studio della Santita and member of the Fondazione Latinitas for the promotion and study of Latin 2005. From 2007 to 2012, he was also Scientific Director of the Historical Archives of the Archdiocese of Lucca.

Pope Benedict XVI. appointed him on 4 August 2007 as Titular Bishop of Celene. The Pope personally consecrated him on September 29th of the same year the bishop; Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone SDB were co-consecrators, Cardinal Secretary of State and Cardinal Chamberlain, and Marian Cardinal Jaworski, Archbishop of Lviv.

In 2007 he became Pope Benedict XVI. appointed a full member of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church. On April 17, 2012, he was confirmed as prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives and appointed a member of the Central Commission for the archives of the Holy See.
