Sérgio Paulinho

Sérgio Miguel Moreira Paulinho ( born March 26, 1980 in Oeiras ) is a Portuguese cyclist. He started in his career already at many Grand Tours, where he collected mainly as helpers experience. Sometimes, however, he came even to the train and was able to, for example, 2010 to decide a stage of the Tour de France itself. His strengths lie mainly in the mountains and the time trials, where he already was able to win the national championship of his country.

Career

Sérgio Paulinho began his career in 2002 with the cycling team ASC -Vila do Conde. The road Cycling Championships 2002 in Zolder he was in the U23 class third behind Tomas Vaitkus and Alexander Bespalow time trial. In 2004 he moved to Portuguese professional team LA Pecol. There he drove a great summer. First he was Portuguese time trial champion and won little later two stages in the Tour of Portugal. In final standings he finished sixth. His absolute highlight was the Olympic Games in Athens. In the road race, he came along with Paolo Bettini at the finish line and won the silver medal behind him.

Since 2005, Paulinho drove for the Spanish ProTour team Liberty Seguros - Würth, the scandal related to the Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes presented by the doping affair under the name of the new Kazakh main sponsor as a team Astana. On September 5, 2006 Paulinho celebrated its greatest success in professional road cycling, he by a breakaway in the final kilometer won a stage at the tenth stage of the Vuelta a España ( Tour of Spain and ProTour races). Then it moved to the Portuguese Discovery Channel, but the following year he moved back to the Astana team. From 2010 to 2011, he competed for Team RadioShack.

In the tenth stage of the Tour de France in 2010 he was able to prevail in the final sprint razor thin against the White Russians Vasil Kiryjenka and thus win the stage.

Prior to the 2012 season of the now 31 -year-old joined the Danish Team Saxo Bank to be used as a helper, especially in the mountains and in the team time trial, but also in some races as captain.

His first competition for Saxo Bank denied Paulinho in January 2012 at the Tour Down Under in Australia. There he was with Luke Roberts captain of the team and should achieve a good ranking in the overall standings. Until the penultimate stage, the heaviest portion of the tour, Paulinho was only slightly behind the top - ten, but on the fifth day at the two-time passage of the final climb, the Portuguese lost more than seven minutes on the stage winner, and thus the connection to the top of the standings. Sergio Paulinho is the son of former Portuguese cyclist Jacinto Paulinho.
