2012 Tour Down Under

The 14th Tour Down Under was held until January 22, 2012 from 15. The cycling consisted of six stages, the first began on 17 January. Two days before the race with the criterion Down Under Classic was opened ( in the UCI calendar as a criterion Down Under Criterium registered ), that does not count for the overall ranking. The total race distance was 803 km and thus 45 km more than last year. The Tour Down Under was the first competition of the UCI World Tour in 2012.

Eligible were the 18 ProTeam and a team of the University of South Australia who completed the 133 driver with comprehensive peloton.

Stage by stage

The race took place in the province of South Australia and around the capital Adelaide. The Tour Down Under was as every year the focus of the Festival of Cycling, a week-long event in which South Australia 's all about bike.

Down Under Classic

The criterion about 51 km in Adelaide, capital of South Australia, opened the Tour Down Under in 2012 and contained four premium sprints. It does not count to the overall standings for the ranking of the UCI World Tour and consisted of 30 flat laps of 1.7 kilometers. Before the Down Under Classic, the participating teams were presented to the audience.

Stage 1, Prospect - Clare

The first stage began in Adelaider suburban Prospect and led over 149 kilometers north to Clare. Two intermediate sprints and mountains classification in the third category were happening on the track, which rises continuously easily.

Stage 2, Lobethal - Stirling

148 km long was the second stage of the Tour Down Under, which contained the obligatory two intermediate sprints and a mountain stage in the second category. At the end of the day the line was passed in Stirling three times. In this circuit, which corresponds to the to the third section of the previous year, on the road climbs towards the target.

Stage 3, Unley - Victor Harbor

The third part of the day led the field over a distance of 134.5 kilometers largely flat, are extended to the two sprint and a mountain stage of the second category, from Unley to Victor Harbor to the south.

Stage 4, Norwood - Tanunda

The path to the fourth stage was 130 kilometers long between Norwood, a suburb of Adelaide, the start of the fourth portion formed as in 2011, and Tanunda in the northwest. There were two sprint and two climbs ( one of the first category and a second ) taken on a mainly flat route.

Stage 5, McClaren Vale - Willunga

The fifth part of the day in the south of the province was, as in previous years, the " Queen Stage " of the Tour Down Under and this year with 151.5 km also the longest section. With the to be traversed twice Willunga Hill the most difficult climb of the tour had to be taken. At the summit, the two climbs of the first category of the day were extended, and there is two sprints on the track. For the first time in the history of the race, the goal was right on the Willunga Hill, making a small mountain arrival decided the outcome of the race.

Stage 6, Adelaide City Council Street Circuit

With a 90 -kilometer criterion over 20 laps of 4.5 km in Adelaide ended the Tour Down Under in 2012. The track was flat and contained a twice -evaluated mountains classification in the third category and two intermediate sprints on the finish line.
