Sergio Scariolo

Sergio Scariolo ( born April 1, 1961 in Brescia, Lombardy ) is an Italian basketball coach.

Career

After Scariolo assistant coach had been to Basket Brescia, Scavolini Pesaro, and was also responsible for the Italian military selection, In 1989 he became head coach in Pesaro. In his first season he won the Italian championship, at the European level reached the final in Scariolo Korac Cup and the following year the semi-finals in the national champion trophy. After two years, led the team of Aurora Desio, he took over in 1993 as coach of Fortitude Bologna. He led the upstart straight into the playoffs and was named Coach of the Year of the Serie A. Scariolo remained until November 1996 at Fortitude and reached in his last full season there, the final of the Italian Cup.

From 1997 to 2008 Scariolo was active as a coach in the Spanish ACB League. He won with Tau Ceramica in 1999 the Spanish basketball Cup, in 2000 he reached the final of the play-offs in the ACB league. At Real Madrid, he was from 1999 to 2002 responsible for the sporty line, in the last two years, he was also General Manager. After winning the Spanish Championship 2000 Scariolo was also awarded in Spain as coach of the year, the year after he failed, however, with Real in the final. From November 2003 to 2008 he was a coach at Unicaja Malaga, where Scariolo again in 2005 won the Spanish Cup and the 2006 national championship. The end of 2008 he took over as coach of BK Khimki and a little later the since the end of the 2008 Olympics vacant position as a Spanish national coach. At the European Championships 2009, he won with Spain the title. Scariolo remained until the end of 2010 in Khimki, reaching the finals with the club in 2009 in the Eurocup. In 2011 he returned for the first time since 1997 as a club coach back to Italy and signed a contract with Olimpia Milano. In the summer of the same year Scariolo led Spain to defend his title at the European Championships in 2011, after the World Cup had gone still rather disappointing with the departure in the quarterfinals in 2010. After winning the silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games Scariolo announced his resignation from the office of the Spanish national team.
