The Serre Mountains is a mountain range in the southern Italian region of Calabria. The slopes of the mountain range are characterized by a dense tree growth. The name of the mountain probably derives from Hebrew (Ser - for mountains) or from the regional dialect ( Serra - for sägeförmig ).

Geography

The mountain range extends from Limina pass the Aspromonte in the south to Istmo di Marcellinara in the north, and borders there to the Sila mountains. The Serre Mountains is therefore in the provinces of Reggio Calabria, Vibo Valentia and Catanzaro.

Characteristics

The Serre Mountains consists of two long, parallel mountain ranges with different levels of soil surveys, which echoes the morphology of the teeth of a saw. The highest peak is the Monte Pecoraro with 1423 meters.

Geologically, the mountain is one of the so-called Alpi calabresi with the main rock types granite porphyry, quartz diorite and serpentine. In the eastern areas of various clay minerals occur. In contrast, the structure of the Monte Mammicomito based on limestone (similar to the Dolomites ), with caves, sinkholes and Ponoren. The latter Kalkgesteinsformationen occur within the Serre Mountains only at Monte Mammicomito. A special landscape of the Serre are the Badlands.

The territory of Serre is largely covered by deciduous and coniferous forests, whose development is favored by numerous smaller watercourses. In the valleys the silver fir and oak dominate, from 800 meters above sea level are mainly book before.

The fauna was and is for a long time victim of rampant poaching. Nevertheless, in recent years the return of smaller wolf pack of the Italian wolf could be observed.
