SES-7

SES -7 (formerly: Protostar 2 Indostar and 2, also Cakrawarta 2 ) is the name of a telecommunications satellites operated by SES World Skies.

Order and development

The satellite was originally to be called Galaxy 8IR and was built by Boeing for PanAmSat. This agreement was terminated in 2002 by PanAmSat, after there had been disagreements between the two companies.

On 14 January 2008, Boeing Satellite Systems announced that the company would build the Protostar 2 satellite for ProtoStar. These were around the nearly completed Galaxy 8IR that has been modified for Protostar.

Specifications

Protostar 2 satellite bus is based on the 601HP Boeing and delivered at the beginning of its planned 15-year life of nearly 10 kW of electrical power. His starting weight was 3900 kg, the mass in orbit 3087 kg. The satellite carries 13 S -band transponders (10 in operation, three in reserve ) and 27 Ku -band transponders (22 in operation, 5 in reserve). Power is supplied by two solar panels of 26 m span and 30 NiH batteries. The satellite itself is about 4 meters high and 2.7 x 3.6 m wide. For the Ku-band antenna of 272 cm and a diameter of 127 cm are available. The transmitting antenna for the S- band has also a diameter of 272 cm in diameter, and there is also a receiving antenna for the X-band of 127 cm diameter.

The control center was created by the company Integral Systems. The main station was installed in Indonesia and operated by Indovision, the replacement station was installed in Singapore, where there was also the ground station for Protostar 1, and operated by SingTel. Both stations were equipped with a 13- m antenna.

Operation for Protostar

Protostar 2 was launched on 16 May 2009 by a Proton rocket in a Geotransfer orbit. The satellite brought by its own drive in a geostationary position over India at 107.7 degrees Ost0107.7 and served from there from Indonesia, India, the Philippines and Taiwan with satellite TV. The S-band transponders were doing leased to the Indonesian company Indovision. For this reason, the satellite also Indostar 2 or Cakrawarta 2 was called. After the usual tests Boeing handed over the satellite on 16 June 2009 to the operator Protostar ..

Auction and operation for SES

Since Protostar 2 still could not generate any revenue, and Protostar 1 since April 2009 had no broadcasting license, the company Protostar did not have enough income and came into financial difficulties. She reported on 29 June 2009 at bankruptcy. As part of the bankruptcy estate, the two operational satellites Protostar Protostar 1 and 2 were auctioned.

As before, had Indovision rights to use the S- band transponders Protostar 2, so that the prospective buyers had to take this into account when repositioning. A shift of 107.7 ° East to the SES position 108.2 ° East would still be possible, while a shift to the AsiaSat - position 105.5 ° East would have made an S-band supply from Indonesia to the existing conditions impossible.

In the auction on 16 December 2009, SES has pledged to commit $ 185 million satellite Protostar 2 SES surpassed this AsiaSat, the only bidders. Intelsat had indeed shown interest, but then took no active part in the auction.

The formalities lasted until May 2010, after Protostar 2 was renamed SES -7 and positioned at 108.2 ° Ost0108.2 to support the NSS- 11, SES World Skies in the network.
