Setauket - East Setauket is a census -designated place ( statistical area ) on the north shore of Long Iceland in the U.S. state of New York. It includes the three unincorporated hamlets, ie settlements without self-government, Setauket, East Setauket and Strongs Neck within the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County. According to the Census of 2000, the area had 15,931 inhabitants.

Geography

The three Hamlets a total area of 24 km ², of which 21.9 km ² land and 2.1 km ² water surface. Strongs Neck is a peninsula between the Conscience Bay and Port Jefferson Harbor, the most southwest foothills Setauket Harbor is called. These are bays of Long Iceland Sound. The other two places are located south of it domestically.

Adjacent villages are West Stony Brook and Old Field, south Centereach, southeast Terryville, east Port Jefferson Station Port Jefferson and Poquott and northeast.

In the south of the area there are also industrial and commercial facilities, otherwise it is marked by residential and forest areas.

History

On April 14, 1655 Europeans bought the area the Setalcott Indians from, one of which included the future place name comes, wherein the colonization initially started under the name of Ashford. On March 7, 1666 Brookhaven was founded, the most important settlement and until 1789, the government center Setauket was initially.

In the War of Independence Setauket was a garrison of British troops. On August 22, 1777, American troops landed under Abraham Parsons, but could not occupy the place. Another attack took place under Benjamin Tallmadge in November 1780. Since 1778 was Setauket base of a spy network against the British. On April 22, 1790 George Washington therefore visited the place.

In the 19th century Setauket was an important shipbuilding location, in the early 20th century, partly a tourist. Between 1879 and 1937 there was a bridge over the bay at Strongs Neck.

Culture and sights

In Setauket, some preserved colonial buildings, including the churches Caroline Church are between 1729 and Setauket Presbyterian Church of 1660. The Emma S. Clark Library is a large public library. Setauket is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem for the Americas.

Infrastructure

Setauket is tied to the Long Iceland Expressway ( Interstate 495). The LIRR route between Port Jefferson and Penn Station runs through the territory, has here but no support.
