Settle Junction railway station

Settle Junction is a closed railway station today and still operated interlocking about 2.8 km south of Settle in North Yorkshire on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. The station was on the railway Leeds - Morecambe and was opened in October 1876 by the Midland Railway Railway Company. The station was as a transfer station to the recently opened railway line Settle - Carlisle and older - intended route to Morecambe - now disused. However, the expected number of passengers did not correspond to reality because the stations in Settle, Giggleswick and Long Preston, not only offered also interchanges, but also direct access to the respective places, as opposed to remote Settle Junction, which also closed on November 1, 1877 been.

The signal box now controls not only the branch of the railway line Settle - Carlisle, but also the sections along the route to Hellifield in the south, Blea Moor sidings to the north and Carnforth in the North West. The section until after Carnforth is 39 km, the longest section in the British railway network, is responsible for only a switchboard. Network Rail is aware of the restrictions which this circumstance means consciously trying to change the situation.
