Severomuysk

Seweromuisk (Russian Северомуйск ) is an urban-type settlement in the Autonomous Republic of Buryatia (Russia) with 2198 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement lies in the valley of the Mujakan, a left tributary of the Muja which separates the Northern Mujagebirge ( Seweromuisker Mountains ) in the north of Mujakangebirge in the south. The two in this area about 2300 meters high mountain ranges belong to the system of Stanowoihochlandes. Seweromuisk is located about 620 kilometers (direct distance) north-east of the Republic capital of Ulan -Ude.

The settlement is part of the Rajons Muiski and is removed from its administrative center Taksimo good 90 kilometers to the southwest.

History

The site was developed in connection with the construction of the Baikal - Amur Mainline (BAM ) from the mid-1970s. A few kilometers north began with the construction of over 15 km long tunnel Seweromuisker. 1977 the location of the status of an urban-type settlement was awarded.

Since delayed the completion of the tunnel not originally planned for almost 20 years until 2001, Seweromuisk stayed longer than planned logistics center of the tunnel. When work in the 1990s temporarily came to a halt due to the economic crisis due to lack of funding, but left almost two thirds of the inhabitants of the place.

Economy and infrastructure

Practically the only economic factor is the location on the Baikal - Amur Mainline ( route kilometers in 1385 from Taischet ), the maintenance of the Seweromuisker tunnel and the north of the station branching, 60 kilometers long, leading over the pass of Seweromuisker mountains and even after the completion of the tunnel further operated bypass route.
