Shahrud, Iran

Shahrud (Persian شاهرود, also Shāhrūd, Shahrood, Shahroud, formerly Emāmshahr ) is a city in Iran and the largest city of Semnan province. It is the capital of the eponymous district. In the Iranian census 2006 126.916 people lived in the city ( 35,548 families). Near Shahrud is since 1998 a launch site of the Iranian Space Agency for the testing of military rockets from Shahab 3

Geography

The city is located about 410 kilometers east of Tehran. Shahrud located on the Silk Road and is approximately half the distance between the capital and Mashhad. In Shahrud the road starts in the north of the Elburz Mountains located Gorgan.

The modern Shahrud is the historic town of Bistam (now Bastam ) grown together, which lies a few kilometers north of the city center in the hills.

North of the city are the Elburz Mountains, in the south of the Great Salt Lake Desert ( Dasht -e Kavir ). The town crossing the river Tashkent ends in the desert. Shahrud located in the Damghan - basin, a sub- zone of the Kavirsenke in the Great Salt Desert is located.

The climate is continental and according to the height.

History

2006 traces of prehistoric settlements have been ( about 8000 years old ) found in Shahrud, whereby in addition to stoves and rest of tool production came to light .. Shahrud was more of a village before the reign of Fath Ali Shah Qajar dynasty from which of two ancient castles and a small farm called Schabdari existed. The surrounding areas of Biarjomand, Miami and Bastam have a separate story.

The old town of Bastam is located 6 km north of Shahrud. Their pre-Islamic history is not fully understood. It is believed that this city was built during the reign of Shapur II ( 310-379 ). During the era of the Abbasids Bastam was after Damghan the second largest city in the province Qomis.

Bastam is considered the birthplace of Bayazid Bistami (* 803 AD), the later Persian Muslim mystics of Sufism.

The city was visited by Nāsir -i Chusrau, the famous Persian poet of the 12th century. This she described as the center of the province Qomis. The importance of Bastam but declined during the Mongol attacks, so that Shahrud took their place.

Attractions

The most interesting historical sites in and around Shahrud are:

  • Seljuk mosque in Bastam, built in 1120 AD.
  • The village Kharaqan, about 12 km from Bastam, famous in 14-15. Century. Tomb of Abul- Hassan Kharaqani, one of the most famous Aref ( mystics ) of the Sufis in the 12th century. The stone building with a dome dates from the 12th century.
  • Ruins of the castle Byar, located in the southeast of Bastam and on the edge of the desert of Byarjomand, umfass an old mosque and a castle wall with three gates.
  • Mosque Ruins of Farumad, located about 165 km north-east, important architectural monument of the 13th century. Farumad and surroundings were the center of the Sarbedarischen movement in the late Ilkhan period.
  • Museum of Shahrud, comes from the Qajar and early Pahlavi period, was formerly owned by the municipality, located in the city center, two-story brick building,
