The Damāvand - highest mountain in the Alborz Mountains

The Alborz (Persian البرز Alborz ) is a mountain range in northern Iran between the Caspian Sea and the Persian highlands, which rises up to 5671 m high. The highest peak is the volcano Damāvand in the central part of the mountain near the Persian capital Tehran, immediately adjacent to the southern slopes of the Alborz.

The Alborz extends from west to east, from the border with Armenia to the borders with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. With a total length of 600 kilometers, the mountain range is only from 60 to 130 kilometers wide.

Ski Resorts

Winter sports are possible due to the high altitude and snowy winter. Especially in the area of the metropolis Tehran, there are some well-known winter sports resorts: Dizin, Schemschak, Totschāl and Darbandsar.

Flora and Fauna

Falcon

On the north side of the Alborz mountains are large forests of beech ( Oriental Beech ) and other deciduous trees, such as the endemic Parrotie ( Parrotia persica ), which have been preserved in this expansion only in the extreme east of the range of the beech. The fauna includes bears and wolves, lynx and caracal, the smaller Bobcat Africa, fox and golden jackal, the wild cat, and leopard. These 30 species of eagles, hawks, buzzards and vultures. At larger herbivores there are deer, the Maral, a larger Asian relatives of our deer, fallow deer, ibex, chamois, wild sheep and wild boar.

Mythological and literary significance

The Alborz Mountains also play as - not always exactly localized - Place of Iranian mythology a role and is sung in Persian literature. It takes place several times in Firdausi's Shahnameh mention, among others, as a place where the magic bird Simurgh had its nest and reared Zal. In addition, the Kings Fereydun and Kai Kobad will be grown in the shelter of these mountains; Nowzar left his wife in the Alborz before Afrasiyab to safety and Kai Kaoos the divs built two castles for themselves.
