Shan State Army – South

The Shan State Army - South (SSA- S ) is a resistance group of the Shan minority in Myanmar ( Burma). Do not confuse one the SSA -S with the SSA -N, the Shan State Army - North, a group that maintains a ceasefire with the Burmese central government.

The number of armed fighters is estimated at 10,000. The SSA -S was founded in January 1996 by former combatants of Muang Tai Army in the Thai province of Chiang Mai. The headquarters of the SSA -S is located in Loi Taileng on the Thai- Burmese border opposite the District Pang Mapha the Thai province of Mae Hong Son

The SSA -S is in constant battle with the troops of the State Peace and Development Council ( SPDC ) and the United Wa State Army ( UWSA ). In April 2005, tried to conquer the headquarters of the SSA -S in Loi Taileng a combined military unit of SPDC and UWSA. The UWSA attacked with 20 battalions (about 3,000 troops ) at the headquarters. In just one day, the UWSA suffered losses of 560 soldiers and had to stop their attack.
