Shannon–Erne Waterway

The Shannon - Erne Waterway (English Shannon Erne Waterway, irish Uiscebhealach Sionainne na -na hÉirne ) is a canal linking the River Shannon in the Republic of Ireland and the River Erne, which mainly flows through Northern Ireland. It is managed by the Waterways Ireland Society.

The waterway has a length of 63 km. He counts between Carrick -on-Shannon in County Leitrim to Upper Lough Erne Lake in County Fermanagh 16 locks.

The channel was launched in 1860 in operation, but was a complete commercial failure and was in fact already closed in 1869 again. After extensive repairs the channel on May 23, 1994 Corraguil Lock, Teemore in County Fermanagh was officially opened again.

The channel together with the River Shannon, the Erne and the Grand Canal the largest houseboat spot in Europe. Boaters are over 800 km of contiguous water routes.
