The Shinano (Japanese信 浓 川, -gawa ) is 367 kilometers long is the longest river in Japan.
It flows through the prefectures of Gunma, Nagano and Niigata. However, in the prefectures of Gunma and Nagano it bears the name Chikuma (Japanese千 曲 川, -gawa ). The Shinano has a catchment area of 11,900 km ².
