Shire of Boulia

- 22.9139.9Koordinaten: 22 ° 54 ' S, 139 ° 54' O The Shire of Boulia is a Local Government Area ( LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland. The area is 60,951 km ² and has about 480 inhabitants.

Geography

The Shire is located in the Outback to the west of the state on the border with the Northern Territory about 1400 km west of the capital, Brisbane, and about 620 kilometers east of Alice Springs.

Administrative headquarters of the LGA is Boulia with about 200 inhabitants. Other towns are Barkly, Buckingham, Piturie, Warburton and Warenda.

History

Burke and Wills were the first known European explorers in the region. From their expedition in 1861 to the founding of Boulia which is to be named after a Native American word for waterhole, passed more than 18 years. In 1887, the district Boulia was established as an administrative unit.

Management

The Boulia Shire Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
