Shire of Burdekin

Geography

The Shire is located on the east coast of the state about 1050 km north of the capital, Brisbane.

Largest city and administrative headquarters of the LGA is Ayr with about 8100 inhabitants. Other towns are Airdmillan, Airville, Alva, Barratta, Brandon, Carstairs, Clare, Colevale, Cromarty, Dalbeg, Eight Mile Creek, Frederick Field, Giru, Home Hill, Horseshoe Lagoon, Inkerman, Jarvis Field, Jerona, Kirknie, Majors Creek, Millaroo, Mona Park, Mount Kelly, Mount surround, Mulgrave, Osborne, Range More, Ravenswood, Rita Iceland, Shirbourne, Swans Lagoon, Upper Haughton, Wangaratta and Wunjunga.

History

Was named the Burdekin River, which gave its name to the Shire, by Ludwig Leichhardt by one of the sponsors of his expedition, Thomas Burdekin. In 1849 he explored the region, ten years later, the first ranchers and 1882 the towns of Ayr and Brandon were founded came. From 1888, there was an administrative district in the area, which was named after the town of Ayr until 1976 and was then renamed the Burdekin Shire.

Management

The Burdekin Shire Council has seven members. The Mayor ( mayor) and six other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
