Shire of Cook

Geography

The Shire is located in the northeast of the state and occupies a large part of the Cape York Peninsula. It is about 1560 km away from the capital Brisbane.

Largest city and administrative headquarters of the LGA is the town of Cooktown on the east coast with about 1,300 inhabitants. Other towns are Ayton, Bloomfield, Coen, Lakeland, Laura, Marton, Portstewart, Portland Roads and Rossville.

History

Already in the 40s of the 19th century roamed researchers the northeastern peninsula. The mineral resources in the area quickly promoted the colonization and the Cooktown founded in 1876 it had its main port. The Cook Shire was created in 1919 from the Hann Shire and the Daintree Shire in 1932 came Cookstown added, which had been independent until then.

Management
