Shire of Mornington (Queensland)

Geography
The Shire consists of a group of islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria to the main island Mornington. It is about 1850 km away from the capital Brisbane.
The vast majority of residents living in Gununa on the main island, where there is also the administrative headquarters is located. About 90 % of the population is Aboriginal.
History
The Wellesley Islands were initially settled exclusively by the natives. 1914 a mission was opened on the main island. The Mornington Shire and local self-government was introduced in 1978.
Management
The Mornington Shire Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
