Sideburns

Sideburns (only plural of French côté "Site"), and regionally whiskers or contour and called in the Biedermeier period Favorites are lateral hairs on both sides of the face from the hairline of the scalp hair to beard. In the U.S., sideburns called sideburns and were probably after Ambrose Burnside, a general in the American Civil War, named.

The whiskers is often paired with other beard styles. For example, Kaiser Wilhelm I wore his sideburns rampant in combination with a mustache. He appreciated it very much if the senior officers could grow sideburns. So the beard sideburns were widespread in 19th century Germany.

The shape of the sideburns follows fashionable change. The beard sideburns of the 19th century are now given way (some minimalist stylized ) short cuts.
