Sidney McNeill " Sid " Gutierrez (born 27 July 1951 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States ) is a former American astronaut.
Training
Gutierrez made his secondary education in 1969 at the Valley High School in Albuquerque. He then studied aeronautical engineering at the United States Air Force Academy and graduated in 1973 with a bachelor's degree. In 1977, he earned a Masters in Management at Webster College.
U.S. Air Force
He joined in 1977 in the U.S. Air Force a, 1981, he was trained as a test pilot and flew then most machines of type T -38, F -15 and F- 16th
He has over 4,500 flight hours in more than 30 different aircraft.
NASA
In 1984 he was elected to the 10th astronaut group of NASA and a year designed as a pilot.
He was one of the speaker connection ( Capcom ) for STS- 42, STS -45, STS -46, STS- 49 and STS- 52.
STS -40
His first and shortest space missions had Gutierrez as pilot on STS - 40, the Space Shuttle Columbia. This mission was postponed several times because of the space shuttle various defects had occurred.
It was the fifth Spacelab mission, the first devoted entirely to life sciences. The main experiment was Spacelab Life Sciences -1. In this physiological studies in humans, performed 30 rodents and thousands of tiny jellyfish. Of the 18 studies were undertaken with ten people, seven rodents and one with the jellyfish.
STS -59
In his second and final space mission Gutierrez was as commander of the mission but this time on board the Endeavour go. The aim of the mission was that one should take pictures of the earth with X-SAR radar to locate as climate change and pollution.
After the space flight
In 1994, he left NASA and the U.S. Air Force to work at Sandia National Laboratories, these belong to the Lockheed Corporation.
