Sigeberht the Good

Sigeberht II (also Sigberct, Sigeberht Sanctus, Sigeberht the Good or Sigeberht the Holy; † 660 ) was from about 650 until his death King of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Essex.

Life

Sigeberhts father's name was Sigebald. He was a relative of his predecessor Sigeberht I..

Sigeberht II was baptized to 653 of Oswiu, his friend the King of Northumbria, converted to Christianity and his companions by Bishop Finan of Lindisfarne in Ad Murum (east of Hexham ). In the same year ( 653 ) Cedd was sent with another priest at the request of Sigeberhts Oswiu to Essex, where he evangelized successfully. His successes were so great that he was on a visit ordained in Lindisfarne of financing bishop of the East Saxons. After his return to Essex he ordained in his support other priests and deacons, and continued his work in which he had founded monastic missionary centers Ythancaestir ( Bradwell -on-Sea ) and Tilaburg ( Tilbury ) continued.

In the year 654 Penda attacked by Mercia in Essex and brought it under his rule. After Penda was like 655 took Oswiu of Northumbria its role as the hegemonic power. To 660 Sigeberht was murdered by relatives, who accused him of being too friendly christians. Swithhelm became his successor. The future King Saelred (before 738-746 ) was a son Sigeberhts.
