Sight & Sound

Sight & Sound is a British film magazine that ( BFI ) is published monthly by the British Film Institute.

Sight & Sound came out for the first time in 1932. Since 1934, occurs the bfi on as editor of the magazine. Originally, it appeared only four times a year, only in the early 1950s Sight & Sound has been published monthly. This changed in 1991, when the also published by the BFI Monthly Filmbulletin rose in Sight & Sound.

Since then, all restarts are presented in detail in the UK every month. Sight & Sound attaches great importance that even the more demanding films that start only in selected cinemas are treated. All movie reviews describe the contents completely, which means that also the end of each treated film is betrayed, and a complete list of possible actors and the film staff.

In addition to the movie reviews you will find interviews, background reports and film- historical themes, with an emphasis on world cinema away from the Hollywood mainstream is placed. This approach brought Sight & Sound the reputation of an elitist film magazine one. The English newspaper The Independent called it " highly intellectual, but still understandable ," the British film critic and former Sight & Sound Author Raymond Durgnat accused the magazine to be elitist, snobbish and puritanical.

The film critics who wrote regularly for the magazine included the later directors of the Free Cinema movement, Tony Richardson, Lindsay Anderson and Karel Reisz.

Sight & Sound Top 10 Lists

Among cinephiles Sight & Sound fame gained by every ten -yearly survey of the best films of all time, are interviewed in the film critics from different countries. 1952 for the first time this top 10 list was published, then Vittorio de Sica's Bicycle Thieves was the best movie of all time. From 1962 to 2002, Citizen Kane undisputed leader of the Top 10 lists. Since 1992, a survey is conducted among film directors in parallel. In the survey in 2012, 846 critics and 358 directors involved. Due to the reputation of the respondents considered the Sight & Sound Top 10 as one of the most significant leaderboards.
