Sillaginidae

Sillago parvisquamis

The Sillaginidae are slim schooling fish from the group of relatives perch ( Percomorphaceae ). They live in the western Indo-Pacific from South Africa to Japan and Australia in the shallow waters along the coasts in the sea and brackish water. The juveniles of some species penetrate into the fresh water of the estuaries. In Australia they are called " Whiting ". The name will still be used in other English speaking countries for the whiting, which they are not related.

Features

The Sillaginidae have an elongated body and a small mouth with few teeth. They have two dorsal fins, the first has 10 to 13 hard fin rays, the second a hard and 16 to 27 soft fin rays. The anal fin has two leading hard jets, followed 14 to 26 soft rays. The scales are small and easily dislodged from the skin. In some species the swim bladder is absent in other species it is complex built with many excesses. The fish are between 15 and 70 inches long.
