Silmido is an uninhabited island in the Yellow Sea off the west coast of South Korea. Its area is about 0.25 km ². It is in the area of the city Incheon and is about five kilometers southwest of the airport Incheon. It is located directly in front of the much larger, inhabited island Muuido, which is connected by a ferry to the mainland.

The Silmido incident

Silmido was historically relevant in the 1960s, when it was used for a training area for an elite military unit, which should assassinate the former North Korean leader Kim Il-sung. Remains of the device are still present. Under still not fully clarified circumstances, the members of the unit mutinied in 1971 and went to Seoul, where they were killed or committed suicide.

Silmido is well known as the Handlungsort published in 2003, the movie " Silmido ", which is loosely based on the Silmido incident today. Thanks to the success of the film, the island became a relatively well known destination for tourists.
