The Rajongemeinde Šilutė is one of the 60 local governments of Lithuania. It is known for its flooding when the ice begins to melt on the Memel. He is the only municipality in Lithuania, which is regularly flooded. The unemployment rate fell from 10.9 % in January 2003 to 7.7% in January 2005. However, the national rate is 1.2-1.7 % higher.
Geography
The total area of the municipality is 1706 km ². Of these, 20 % (340 km ²) of forest, 20.4% (348 km ² ) of water (especially the Nemunas River Delta ), 35.8 % (611 km ²) of arable land, 13.2% (226 km ²) pastures and meadows as well as 3, 5 % (60 km ²) of roads and buildings. The field of Rajongemeinde Šilutė covers a large part of Lithuania Minor and projects northeastward into to Lower Lithuania. In the southern part there are areas with Auweiden. In the Nemunas River Delta and wind Burger Corner there are great Zugvögelpopulationen. Rusnė, a small town ( miestelis ) in the Nemunas River Delta, is the only Lithuanian island city; some parts are below sea level.
Demography
The population development is characterized as in almost all rural areas of Lithuania, including small and medium-sized towns of rural exodus. About 14,000 of the municipality residents are children under 15 years and about 10,000 are over ....
Coat of arms
The coat of arms was created in 1968. It shows the sails of a ship. At the top is a traditional wind direction sensor, such as using it to fishermen. Below is a horn, the ancient symbol of the post. These symbols indicate the Curonian Lagoon, fishing and Šilutė as an old seaport back. By Šilutė led a significant post road.
