Simon Mackay, Baron Tanlaw
Simon Brooke Mackay, Baron Tanlaw of Tanlawhill in the County of Dumfries ( born March 30, 1934) is a British entrepreneur and politician of the defunct Liberal Party in 1988 and since 1971 a member of the House of Lords, where he there now to the non-Party members ( Crossbenchers ) belongs.
Life
Mackay, third son of Kenneth Mackay, 2nd Earl of Inchcape, was a grandson of Charles Vyner Brooke, who was 1917-1946 third and final White Raja of Sarawak in Malaysia today. After 1952-1954 as a second lieutenant in the XII. Royal Lancer served in the Federation of Malaya, he settled in the late 1950s Britain.
In the general election on 8 October 1959 a by-election in 1960 and the general election of 15 October 1964, Mackay applied respectively for the Liberal Party unsuccessfully in constituency Galloway for a parliamentary seat in the House of Commons.
Subsequently, he became increasingly involved in the family company belonging Inchcape and became director in 1967. He remained in this position until the mid-1990s the family's influence in the company fell.
In 1971, he was raised as a life peer with the title of Baron Tanlaw of Tanlawhill in the County of Dumfries to the peerage and has been a member of the House of Lords, where he since the dissolution of the Liberal Party, on March 2, 1988 on the group of non-party upper house members, the so-called cross Bencher belongs.
Due to its special relationship with Malaysia, he was 1973-1975 President of the Sarawak Association for the first time. Later he worked from 1980 to 1996 Member of the Supervisory Board of the London School of Economics and Political Science ( LSE ), and again between 1997 and 1999 President of the Sarawak Association.
Baron Tanlaw is still in the private sector and among other things, CEO of belonging to him Fandstan Electric Group Ltd, a private enterprise group in the field of electrical and railway engineering.
Since April 2010 he is also Chancellor ( Chancellor ) of the University of Buckingham, the only private university in England.
