Sir George Barlow, 1st Baronet

George Hilario Barlow, 1st Baronet, GCB (* 1762, † February 1847 in Farnham ) was a British politician and 1805-1807 Governor General of Fort William.

Barlow was the Bengal Civil Service in 1778 and allotted reached British India, 1779., He became assistant to the tax collector in Gya. 1796 appointed him as Chief Secretary to Government Shore. In 1801 he was a member of the Supreme Council.

In 1802 he was appointed acting Governor-General, 1803 Barlow was raised to the baronet. 1805 Barlow followed the late Charles Cornwallis. Already in 1807 he was appointed by Gilbert Elliot - Murray - Kynynmound, 1st Earl of Minto, superseded, as the government did not support his appointment as Governor-General.

Shortly thereafter, he became Governor of Madras. In this office he clashed with officials and military together. Especially with the army, he came into conflict, as he stroked monthly donations to commanding officers at the direction towards London. Lieutenant Colonel Munro, the Quartermaster General, was blamed by Lieutenant General Hay Macdowall and sold by him. Barlow took off Macdowall and other high-ranking officers and placed them under arrest. Then there was a mutiny, in the course of which it came to fighting. Barlow did not give in and, as Minto turned on its side, the officers had to give. Some lost their jobs, while others of them escaped with light sentences. In 1812 he returned to Britain.

Barlow died in February 1847 in Farnham. He was the younger brother of Admiral Robert Barlow.
