Sir Robert Cotton, 1st Baronet, of Connington

Robert Bruce Cotton, 1st Baronet of Connington (* January 22, 1570, † May 6, 1631 ) was an English politician and founder of the Cotton Library.

Cotton came from the English county of Huntingdonshire. He attended Westminster School and Jesus College, Cambridge. William Camden woke in Cotton 's interest in antiquarian studies, so he began to build a library. In 1601 he became a member of the English Parliament for Huntingdon. He helped the introduction of the title Baronet as a source of money for King James I. to design. Despite an early stage in the Cotton benevolence of James I enjoyed and in which he was raised to the Baronet, Cotton developed anti-royalist views and the authorities feared the use of his library, which was therefore seized in 1630. His heirs were given according to Cotton's death returns the collection of books.

The Cotton Library, the largest private collection of manuscripts, was eventually donated by Cotton's grandson of the nation and is now in the British Library.

Cotton's library was in an 8 x 2 meter space with bookshelves. On each shelf bust of an ancient person was attached. They are, counterclockwise, cataloged as follows: Julius Caesar, Augustus, Cleopatra VII, Faustina, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellius, Vespasian, Titus and Domitian ( Domitian had only one shelf, perhaps because it was the door). The manuscripts will be determined according to the criteria library shelf and number. The manuscript of Beowulf, for example, is marked by the indication Cotton Vitellius A.xv, the manuscript of Pearl is determined by Cotton Nero Ax.
