Sixty Six (film)

Sixty Six ( Alternative title: Sixty Six - An Almost True Story ) is a cinematic tragicomedy by Paul Weiland from 2006 with Helena Bonham Carter and Eddie Marsan.

Action

The outsider Bernie Reubens is on the verge of his own Bar Mitzvah. At first he is planning carefully his generous celebration at a luxury hotel to surpass that of his older brother Alvie. He is thrilled, because on this day it's all about him, because he is rather neglected by his family otherwise. But who gets financially from a disaster to the next and so they are forced to Bernie's disappointment, to keep the Bar Mitzvah celebration in your own home in North London. But that should not be the only problem, as calculated at Bernies great day the final of the FIFA World Cup 1966 will take place. This has the consequence that most of the invited guests cancel Bar Mitzvah, to watch the game. However, the Bernie does not like, after all this is his big day! England must not make it to the finals. Bernie studied by the football teams of all countries in order to establish forecasts can which team has the most winning chances and after plenty of research, he concludes that England has little chance. Meanwhile happened the next stroke of fate, a fire in the house of Reuben destroyed the upper floor, where Bernie's parents Esther and Manny clash. It gets worse, England actually manages in the final round and the nation celebrates, whereas Bernie is devastated. On the day of his Bar Mitzvah, he shows up at the ceremony still at its best and makes among the few guests especially his mother so proud. At home, trying to save what can still be saved, because the celebration is the nightmare. Inexpensive gifts, mainly old people and even here, try some of the guests to follow the final of the World Cup. Bernie's mother Esther finally then calls all for a group photo together, all take their position and should be shot just as the photo is striking that the most important person missing. Bernie is gone. Looking for him to Esther, Mannie and Alvie find in Bernie's shed, where they discover all his football materials and come across an old video of Alvies Bar Mitzvah, so they are exposed to the shocking truth. They look like Bernie will always be excluded from his family, they realize how much you mean to them second son. Father Mannie heads straight to the search for Bernie and when he finally finds him, he has a brilliant idea as Bernies bar mitzvah comes still something to be very special, because who has been a World Cup final on the day of his bar mitzvah. Instantly go Bernie and his father to the football stadium and bumble into the crowd. They fire at the team and ultimately win England the game. The crowd goes wild, including a lucky Bernie, who has never experienced such a great time with his father. Back home clowns the whole family around, playing football and is omitted. Bernie finally feels like a real part of the Reubens.

Publication

The film was released in the UK cinemas on 3 November 2006. Later, he also reached the U.S., where he started off in selected cinemas on August 1, 2008. Among the critics of the film was well received, with a positive evaluation of the New York Times. In Greece, Ireland and England, the film was released on DVD. In Germany the film was shown on 28 April 2008 for the first time on television, but only on pay TV.
