Skaftárhreppur is an Icelandic community in the region Suðurland. On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 466 inhabitants.

Geography

The municipality is bordered to the west on the community Mýrdalur and Mýrdalsjökull, on the north by the municipalities Rangárþing Ytra and Ásahreppur and Vatnajökull and in the east on the community Hornafjörður. Due to the congregation of the eponymous river Skaftá, which rose from the Vatnajökull and is fed by a spur of the Langisjór flows. Furthermore, the gorge Eldgjá and the Laki craters are located within the municipality.

History

The municipality was created on 10 June 1990 as the communities Álftavershreppur, Leiðvallarhreppur, Skaftártunguhreppur, Kirkjubæjarhreppur and Hörgslandshreppur.

Places

The largest town of the municipality is Kirkjubæjarklaustur with about 130 inhabitants.

Traffic

The community is accessible from Vik í Mýrdal in the West or in the East Skaftafell on the ring road Hringvegur.
