Skatepunk

Skate punk ( also Skatecore or skate thrash ) denotes a part of the punk / hardcore scene, which mainly deals with skateboarding.

Skate punk is often viewed as a particular style of music and equated by many the Melodycore. In the 1990s, grunge was in the skate scene in addition very popular since the late 90 Metalcore became more popular.

Origin and development

Already in the late 1970s skating within the U.S. punk scene became popular as a fun sport especially in California, occurred within the California hardcore scene since the early 1980s to hardcore groups, who were not only active skater, but also Skateboarding processed as a theme in their songs. The term " skate punk " was used among other things for the American band Suicidal Tendencies. In Germany the skate punk became popular since the mid- '80s through songs such as My God Rides a Skateboard of the Spermbirds or Skate Tonight by Disaster Area. The band ZSK called their first demo MC Keep skateboarding punk rock and so was a clear statement for the skate punk scene. Nowadays, there are newer genre bands like Narcolaptic return the counter- trend of pop-punk scene to the very roots of the skate punk.

Setting and philosophy

Skatepunk means the combination of skate sports with the spirit and music of the punk / hardcore scene. Strong commercialization of Skate Sports is usually rejected, Skateboarding seen as an anti- sports, which is a contradiction to skate because it is a physically demanding activity. Most skate punk groups, although Skatepunk mostly considered as fun -oriented party music, rather leftist and sometimes even politically committed pronounced ( as in the case of Anti-Flag, NOFX or ZSK ).

Music

The most popular variety among skate punks Melodic Hardcore, but also classic punk rock is increasingly played. Known representatives of the English skate punks are Millencolin, Blink-182, Lagwagon, The Offspring, Pennywise, NOFX and No Cash. The most famous German band is probably ZSK, which also has German -language texts in the repertoire. The texts of skate punks often trade of women, alcohol and party. However, there are some bands with lyrics you can see a political motivation. Selbige motivation is generally directed against neo-Nazis, capitalism, government surveillance and against police violence.
