Slater Martin

Nelson Slater Martin Jr. ( born October 22, 1925 in El Mina, † 18 October 2012 in Houston ) was an American basketball player at the position of the point guards.

Martin started in 1949 his NBA career with the Minneapolis Lakers. He remained there for seven years and took in 1950 and 1952 to 1954 the NBA title. After a short visit to the New York Knicks, he spent the last four years of his career with the St. Louis Hawks, with whom he won the title in 1958 once again.

Martin is one of the best defensive players of the 1950s. He was appointed from 1953-1959 throughout the NBA All-Star and selected from the 1955-1959 All- NBA Second Team. In his 745 matches as a player, he scored 7,337 points in 3,160 assists and 2,302 rebounds.

From 1967 - 1969 Martin coached the ABA team of the Houston Mavericks.

On May 3, 1982 Slater Martin was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
