Slave Lake, Alberta

Slave Lake is a town in the north of the Canadian province of Alberta. It is located southeast of Little Slave Lake at the junction of the Alberta Highway 2 to the Alberta Highway 88

1994 held the place the Arctic Winter Games ( Arctic Winter Games), an event of circumpolar sports and culture. The town is the birthplace of Walter Patrick Twinn, a First Nations person and Canadian Senator.

History

The territory of the present-day village Slave Lake was first discovered by David Thompson in 1799. After its discovery, many fur trading post was established around Slave Lake. The post of the Hudson's Bay Company was located at the outlet of the lake. The first settlement Sawridge was wiped out by a flood in the 1930s, later rebuilt on another site, and renamed Slave Lake. The town was established in 1965 independently. On May 15, 2011, a devastating fire destroyed a large part of the city. At times, the entire population was evacuated.
