Slovak parliamentary election, 1994

The early parliamentary election in Slovakia in 1994 to the National September 30 and Saturday, October 1, took place on Friday instead. There were to be awarded 150 seats in parliament. It was the first popular elections at the state level in the independent Slovakia, since the President has been elected by the parliament in 1993 and the previous general election in 1992 even took place in Czechoslovakia.

Prehistory

The early election was necessary, as the second government of Vladimir Meciar failed in a confidence vote in parliament (so-called parliamentary coup ) and the President Michal Kováč on 15 March 1994 the former Foreign Minister of Meciar's government, Jozef Moravčík to form a temporary government commissioned.

Electoral system

The National Council was elected under the proportional method. There was a minimum threshold of 5 % for individual parties for a coalition of two or three parties, and 7% for four or more parties 10%. The legislature was 4 years.

Participating parties and candidates

There is a choice were 18 political parties and movements with a total of 1,929 candidates.

Choice

The turnout was 75.65 %, continuing the downward trend of the past election season continues.

A total of about 3.9 million voters were called upon on 30 September and on 1 October 1994 to cast their vote.

Follow

The new government was established two months after the election. The coalition agreement between the HZDS, RSS, ZRS and SNS was completed on 12 December 1994; one days thereafter, the President appointed the third government of Vladimir Meciar.
