Slowly We Rot is the debut album by the American death metal band Obituary. It was released in June 1989 on Roadrunner Records.

Formation

After bands such as Possessed and Death had been a pioneer, experienced the death metal end of the 1980s in the United States increasingly an upswing. Obituarys debut Slowly We Rot was also the first notable production by Scott Burns at Morrisound Studios, which were often frequented in the aftermath of death and thrash metal bands. For Slowly We Rot only four pieces were still under the name Xecutioner, re-recorded in Morrisound studio. The rest had already appeared on a compilation called Raging Death. Only shortly before the release, the band renamed.

Reception

In the original issue of the magazine Rock Hard Götz Kühnemund compared the song John Tardy's with the Chuck Schuldiner. However, he criticized riffs and song structures than just occasionally succeeded and recommended the band just " the hardest part" of the readership. He forgave 7.5 out of ten. Jason Birch Meier of Allmusic called Slowly We Rot " historically significant " and a blueprint for a generation of future Death Metal bands. Although the production of Scott Burns was not as crystal clear as on later albums, but this were the early days and the budget is very low. He forgave four out of five stars.
