Action
Martine makes with her father holiday in Alli Champs, the geographical center of France. There she writes her cousin Raoul postcard. In Raoul's school in the small town of Thiers, his teacher Jean -François Richet is attentive to the postcard and include them in their teaching. While the class of Mademoiselle Petit Molière's The Miser treated, a new student arrives. His name is Julien and comes from a poor background. When Patrick, a student of his new class, go home, he discovers that Julien lives in a hovel.
Monsieur Richet relates with his pregnant wife Lydie a new apartment. A neighbor comes with her little son Grégory home and finds that she has lost her wallet. When Julien is directed by his teacher out of the classroom because he does not have his textbook while he steals the money in the corridor from the jackets of his classmates. Monsieur Richet, whose wife has brought in the meantime to a boy, talks to his students about Julien and tries them to convey that child abuse is inexcusable. In the following school holidays Patrick moves to a summer camp, where he met Martine and her gets his first kiss.
Background
The shooting took place in Clermont- Ferrand, Bruere - Allichamps, Thiers and Vichy. Director François Truffaut has a cameo appearance in a blue shirt at the beginning of the film. His daughter Eva is featured in the film.
Pocket money was premiered on March 17, 1976 in France. The Germany premiere followed in June 1976 at the Berlinale, where the film was competing for the Golden Bear. In 2003 the film was released on DVD.

Awards
Pocket money was awarded the Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. At the Berlinale 1976 Truffaut film took part in the competition for the Golden Bear and was there awarded the Reader's Choice Award Berliner Morgenpost.
