Smržov (Jindřichův Hradec District)

Smržov ( German Smerschow ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic. It is located 19 km north-east of the center of České Budějovice and belongs to Okres Jindřichův Hradec.

Geography

The place is located on the left side of the golden channel in the Trebon Basin in the area of the existing since 1977 UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Třeboňsko.

Smržov nad Lužnicí is only accessible via a road from Lomnice and is surrounded by large fish ponds. The largest being the easternmost Koclířov and Dvořiště in the southwest. To the west, the forest area Smržovský les expands.

Neighboring towns are Záblatí in the north, Lomnice nad Lužnicí in the east, and Lužnice Preseka the southeast, Dunajovice, Horni Slověnice and Dolni Slověnice in the south and Mazelov in the northwest.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1367 in the application of the pond Dvořiště. In the 13th century, the first fish ponds were created and as the owner of Lomnice, Ješek of Kosova Hora was built by the marked with a stone embankment Dvořiště, by fields and meadows were flooded by Smržov.

During the time of the Rosenbergs, headed by Štěpánek Netolický was the golden channel. As part of the water works was also responsible for creating the Koclířov pond. After the Battle of White Mountain, it came on the embankment of the pond to a battle between rebel troops Heinrich Matthias von Thurn and the Imperialists under Charles Bonaventure de Longueval, Comte de Bucquoy. In the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War, then above all, the troops of Baltasar Marradas harassed by the people. As 1660 Johann Adolf of Schwarzenberg owner of the place was, he let in Smržov and other places small chapels built to commemorate the suffering of the residents in the war. These chapels were called by the villagers Marradas Chapels.

The pond Dvořiště now serves mainly of rest, on its banks, there is a campsite and holiday resorts with 130 cottages.
