Smržovka

Smržovka ( German Morchenstern, formerly Morchelstern ) is a Czech town of about 3,500 inhabitants. It is located in the North Bohemian Liberec Region Jizera in and therefore also in the Euro region Neisse.

Location

Smržovka is located about 10 km east of the county town of Jablonec nad Nisou ( German Jablonec nad Nisou ) and is the home city of the Czech Cartoonists Petr Urban, who runs a pub in the place in which his cartoons are on walls and ceilings to see. The Glass cutting is a tradition in the village, ' Jablonec costume jewelery ' was and is manufactured in Smržovka and in the neighboring town Tanvald in large quantities by hand mainly in family grinding shops. In the city there is a Czech-German meeting center. In Smržovka is a luge track with natural ice.

History

The settlement was first mentioned in 1568 and initially belonged to the Smiřický family. From 1622 it was owned by Albrecht von Wallenstein from 1634 it belonged to the counts Desfours. For a long time Smržovka was a center of the timber industry, from the 18th century, the textile and glass industry. From the mid-19th century the village formed a community in the judicial district Tannwald. 1868 the site was officially a market town in 1905, he received the city rights. Until the Second World War the city was inhabited mostly by Germans who were expelled in 1945 and stayed there for some other part as professionals.

Etymology

In the Middle Ages Wallenstein had given it the name Morgenstern ( according to the old weapon). This name is still occasionally found.

The official German designation for Smržovka is Morchenstern. The German name is somewhat controversial among the population, because until about 1970 Morchelstern as German designation was common. The morel is included in the city arms, and often found in the mountainous region Jizera Mountains.
