Municipal mergers

On 1 December 2008 the municipality had 1717 inhabitants. The largest settlements are the city Ólafsvík (990 inhabitants), Hellissandur (401 inhabitants) and Rif (149 inhabitants).

The municipality was created on 11 June 1994 by the merger of the city Ólafsvík ( Ólafsvíkurbær ) with the three rural communities Staðarsveit, Breiðuvíkurhreppur and Neshreppur. The rural community Fróðárhreppur had been incorporated to Ólafsvík on April 1, 1990.

Northern municipality

Ólafsvík

Ólafsvík located just northeast of the western tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula and is today an important place for fishing and trading center for the local farmers.

Rif

Rif is a fishing village on the north western tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. It lies between Hellissandur and Ólafsvík on Breiðafjörður.

In the late Middle Ages Rif was an important trading port. 1467 there was killed by Englishmen of the rich merchants and administrative magistrate of the Danes Björn Þorleifsson. It is told that his wife then launched a campaign of revenge, arrested more than 50 English and had to work as slaves for themselves.

In the area you will find one of the largest breeding areas of the Arctic Tern.

Hellissandur

The village lies west of Hellissandur Rif on the north coast of Snæfellsnes.

Snæfellsjökul

In the center of the municipality of Snæfellsbær the 1446 meter high volcano lies Snæfellsjökul. You can go up in the summer of Ólafsvík from the unpaved mountain road F570 to the south, where it already comes quite close to the summit glaciers and weather permitting on the south side has a good view of the coast. On the way there seem few in the valley of fountains to spray hot water. This is however only to drill holes.

The small fishing village is located south of the Arnarstapi Snæfellsjökul on Snæfellsnes.

Búðir

The lava field Búðahraun, which is a nature reserve, and Búðir ​​, a formerly important commercial center, located in the municipality of Snæfellsbær on the south side of Snæfellsnes.

Staðarsveit
