Socket 939

The base 939 is a processor socket for processors AMD Athlon 64, AMD Athlon 64 FX, AMD Athlon 64 X2 and AMD Opteron. He was introduced in June 2004 as a successor to the base 754. His successor is presented in May 2006 Socket AM2.

Socket 939 is a modification of the base 940, which no longer registered DDR SDRAM requires, in contrast to this, they also normal DDR SDRAM, which allows the construction of cheaper Athlon 64 systems.

The base 939 is different from the base 754 as follows:

For entry-level PCs based on AMD processors Socket 754 was provided, whereas for workstations and servers, the base should be 940 with its dual-channel memory interface apply.

The base 939 was replaced by the new socket AM2 as a standard base for all AMD-Workstation/Desktop-Prozessoren because it is DDR2 800 memory support and AMD's virtualization technology prepared for Pacifica.

Due to increasing popularity of the new Socket AM2 and AM2 later, the base 939 has quickly become a rarity since the upgrade was not very expensive. This had at the time meant that base were 939 components used more expensive than new AM2/AM3-Komponenten, while systems based on the competing Socket 775 Intel were always cheaper.
