Socrates N. Sherman

Socrates Norton Sherman ( born July 22, 1801 in Barre, Vermont, † February 1, 1873 in Ogdensburg, New York) was an American doctor, soldier and politician. Between 1861 and 1863 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Socrates Norton Sherman was born in the beginning of the 19th century in Barre in Washington County. He attended primary school ( grade school ) and then the high school. He then studied medicine and graduated in 1824 at Mount Castleton Medical College. He moved in 1825 to Ogdensburg in St. Lawrence County, where he practiced as a doctor. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1860 for the 37th Congress Sherman was in the 17th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Francis E. Spinner on March 4, 1861. Since he gave up for reelection in 1862, he retired after March 3, 1863 from the Congress.

During the Civil War he served as Major and Surgeon in the 34th Regiment of New York Volunteer Infantry. On October 7, 1865, he was retired as Brevet Lieutenant Colonel of the United States Volunteers. After that he worked as a doctor again in Ogdensburg. He died there on February 1, 1873, was then buried in the same cemetery.
