Söderhamn

Söderhamn is a town in the Swedish province of Gävleborg and the historical province of Hälsingland.

It lies about 75 km north of Gävle at the mouth of the river Söderhamnsån in the Gulf of Bothnia, and is the capital of the municipality of the same name.

History

The settlement began as a fishing harbor at the mouth of the river Söderhamnsån and grew after the establishment of an armory and several sawmills. The municipal rights were granted in 1620. After several devastating city fires the place was rebuilt with parallel streets.

Economy

The city's economy was dominated in the late 20th century by the company Ericsson and a unit of the Swedish Air Force. After both institutions had left the city, the Swedish government tried to compensate by settled the Swedish Patent and Registration Authority here.

Since 2005, an industrial park is located on the former site of Ericsson AB in construction, young innovative companies from all over Sweden to provide an optimal basis. It highlights this tax advantages over the metropolitan areas as well as a very good transport links to the North and South direction.

The largest employers find themselves with the company Arizona Chemical and Svenska mineral in the southern district of Sandarne, as also located in the shopping park E-Center, the largest shopping center Hälsinglands with numerous commercial enterprises directly on the European road 4.
