Somerset West ( English) or Somerset - Wes ( Afrikaans ) is a city in the South African province of Western Cape. It is part of the metropolitan municipality of the City of Cape Town. 2011, it had 55 166 inhabitants.

Somerset West was named in 1819 after Lord Charles Henry Somerset, who was governor of the British Cape Colony at that time. The addition West was added in order to distinguish it from Somerset East, a town in today's Eastern Cape Province.

Somerset West is situated on the False Bay, bounded on the north by the Hottentots Holland Mountains at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains, about 50 kilometers east of the center of Cape Town. On the N2 highway and the railway line Eersterivier-Protem/Bredasdorp It is the commercial and residential center of the entire Helderberg area.
