Sonia Lannaman

Sonia Lannaman ( Sonia May Lannaman, after marriage Garmston; born March 24, 1956 in Aston, Birmingham) is a former British sprinter. At a height of 1.65 m her competition weight was 57 kg.

Early age of 16, she participated in the 1972 Olympics in Munich. In the 100 - meter race she was eliminated in the quarterfinals. In the 4 x 100 - meter relay team they could not survive with the British team the lead.

After she became 1973 European Junior champion in the 100 meters, she won at the British Commonwealth Games in 1974 with the English silver relay behind the Australians. In 1976 she won the 60m Silver at the Indoor Athletics Championships in Munich. With 7.25 s it was only 0.01 seconds behind the Swede Linda Haglund.

In the Commonwealth Games 1978, she won the 100m in 11.27 seconds before the Australians Raelene Boyle and Denise Boyd. About 200 m in 22.89 s was second behind Boyd, and with the English relay she won ahead of Canada and Australia. Shortly thereafter, she won the European Championships in 1978 with the British quartet silver behind the relay from the Soviet Union.

At the Olympic Games in 1980 she left about 100 m in the semi-finals and was in 22,80 s Eighth about 200 m. With the British relay race she won the bronze medal behind the teams from East Germany and the Soviet Union. With a relay victory of the England team at the Commonwealth Games 1982, she ended her career.

Sonia Lannaman is 1,65 m tall and weighed 57 kg in their active time. In 1979 she was awarded the MBE.
