Sonny Fisher

Therman B. " Sonny " Fisher ( born November 13, 1931 in Chandler, Texas; † October 8, 2005 in Houston, Texas) was an American rockabilly singer. From him comes the original version of Rockin ' Daddy, that was popular in the version of Eddie Bond.

Life

Childhood and youth

Sonny Fisher's ancestors were Irish, and Native American. When he was nine years old, his parents divorced and first Fisher lives with his mother in California. Shortly after Fisher moved back to his father's farm in Texas. His grandfather, who also lived on the farm, brought him together with country music and especially the Grand Ole Opry, which was sent live every week from Nashville, into contact.

Career

1951 Fisher had married and in the same year he founded with Paul Vaughan (fiddle ), Joey Long ( electric guitar ), Red Leonie ( steel guitar ), Leonard Curry ( bass) and Darrell Newsome (drums) his own band. Together they began first to play rhythm and blues songs, which was mainly influenced by the blues musician Lightnin ' Hopkins. Having, however, an appearance of Elvis Presley in Texas Corral attended, they switched to rockabilly. After Vaughan and Leonie got out of the band, the group called itself The Rocking Boys.

Fisher and his band got a record deal in 1955, the Starday Records. Their first single, Rockin ' Daddy, the Mason Dixon Line sold south quite good. However, the song has been covered in 1956 by Eddie Bond, who took him to far more fame and is far more associated with the song. Fishers drummer Darrell Newsome, however, was hired by Elvis Presley and later played for the Columbia Records. Fisher remained at Starday, but without success. After the Rocking Boys had quarreled, he turned back to the first rhythm and blues, then country music to. With his drummer Fisher founded his own record label briefly Columbus Records, which, however, did not last long. Until 1965, he appeared in the bars and restaurants of Houston, after which he started his own flooring company.

1979 saw Fisher because of the rockabilly revival, a rediscovery. Ted Carroll, an employee of the rockabilly label Ace Records Fisher had visited in Texas and won it for performances and recordings. He first went on tour in England and played back a disc. In 1993 he played with Sleepy LaBeef on the Rockabilly Fiesta in Spain. After his surprising comeback in Europe Fisher retired but ultimately returned and lived until his death in his home state of Texas. He died in 2005 at the age of 74 years in Houston.
