Sophie Gengembre Anderson

Sophie Gengembre Anderson (* 1823 in Paris, † March 10, 1903 in Falmouth, Cornwall) was a Franco-British painter, focusing on the representation of children and women, often in a rural area was. Her work has been assigned to the Pre-Raphaelites.

Life

She was the daughter of the Parisian architect Charles AC Gengembre and originating from England mother. At an early age she studied portraiture with Carl von Steuben in Paris.

At the outbreak of the Revolution of 1848, she moved to Cincinnati in America, where she married the British artist Walter Anderson. 1854 she returned to England. 1855 presented their works at the Royal Academy. Later she lived a long time on Capri.
