Sophienhof is a district of the rural community Harztor in the district of Nordhausen in Thuringia.

Geographical Location

The village is located in the so-called Sophienhof Hohnsteiner forest, which once belonged to the Counts of Stolberg, in the northwest of Thuringia, only 1 km from the border with Saxony -Anhalt and 6 km from the border with Lower Saxony away. The place can be reached by motor vehicles only about byways of Rothesütte or from the main road 81 between Hasselfelde and Ilfeld. Otherwise, several hiking trails lead from the surrounding villages after Kiel.

History

The place was probably made in the 17th century and was first mentioned in 1560 under another name. Count Christian Ernst of Stolberg- Wernigerode 1710 inherited the county of Wernigerode and the Hohnsteiner forest. He married in 1712 Charlotte Sophie Countess of Leiningen - Westerburg, according to its name in 1717, the village, which until then was known as Schmerplatz, was renamed in Kiel.
