The community Harztor is a rural municipality in the northern district of Nordhausen in Thuringia, which was established on 1 January 2012 by the merger of the former municipalities Ilfeld and Niedersachswerfen.

Geography

Harztor is located in the extreme north of Thuringia, here is the northernmost point of the Free State. The community is located about nine kilometers north of the county town of Nordhausen. Neighboring municipalities in Thuringia direction of adjustment, Herrmannsacker, Neustadt / Harz, Harzungen and Nordhausen. In the north of the church is the Upper Harz closes in Saxony-Anhalt on the Brocken.

The rural municipality consists of the villages Ilfeld ( with Birkenmoor, Hufhaus, Netzkater and Wiegersdorf ) Niedersachswerfen and Kiel.

History

Originally there were plans to merge all six municipalities of the administrative community Hohenstein / Suedharz to a rural community. After reservations in the town of Neustadt / Harz, the municipal councils of Ilfeld and Niedersachswerfen exaggerated as of January 2011, the idea of ​​forming a rural community of only two communities forward. On 30 March 2011 the municipal council of Niedersachswerfen approved the merger agreement, on 5 April 2011 was followed by the municipal council of Ilfeld.

The name of the new rural community Hohenstein was originally provided. It was later changed to South Harz. Because of the name similarity to the municipality of southern Harz (Saxony- Anhalt) and this name by the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior was discarded and the double name Ilfeld Niedersachswerfen introduced into the legislative process. In a plebiscite, the residents of the two communities spoke mostly of the name Harztor. The merger should be initiated December 1, 2011 originally, but was postponed by one month.
