Sophus Michaëlis

Sophus Michaelis ( born Sophus August Berthel Michaëlis; † January 28, 1932 in Copenhagen, born May 14, 1865 in Odense) was a Danish poet.

Life

Michael 's father was German and his mother was of Spanish descent. She died when he was still a little boy. The operator of a pharmacy in his hometown recognized his great talents and made ​​for a good education. After high school he studied linguistics, art history and music. Travel to Italy, Greece and Egypt deepened his knowledge of classical culture of these countries. The varied experience gave him a solid base for historical novels such as The eternal sleep, which depicts Napoleon's expedition to Russia. Further works are Hellenes and Barbarians (1914 ). In Revolutionary wedding he mastered spectacular content.

He was primarily a poet who was able to express his feelings in elegant verses. Michael was in his time the most popular writers of his country and his works achieved numerous editions.

Michaelis was married from 1895 to 1911 with the Danish writer Karin Michaelis.
