Sotero Laurel

Sotero " Teroy " Cosma H. Laurel ( born September 27, 1918 † 16 September 2009) was a Filipino politician and President of the Senate pro tempore temporarily.

Biography

Laurel came from an influential politically and socially committed family. Of the nine children of his father, José P. Laurel, who was president of the Philippines between 1943 and 1945, beating five also a political career. His younger brother, Salvador Laurel was during the presidency of Corazon Aquino 1986-1992 Vice President and Jose B. Laurel Jr. temporarily Speaker of the House. His brother Jose S. Laurel III was temporarily Ambassador to Japan, Mariano Laurel Laurel Arsenio banker and a race car driver, the first driver in succession won the Macau Grand Prix in 1962 and 1963.

After school he studied law at the University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, Georgetown University and Harvard University. He then worked as a lawyer and as a professor of law at the Far Eastern University and the Lyceum of the Philippines University. He was also temporarily chairman of the board of the Lyceum of the Philippines University system and the 1963-1965 president of the Association of Colleges and Universities ( PACU ). In 1986, the Ordre des Palmes Knight's Cross of Académiques he was awarded.

Between 1987 and 1992 he was a senator during the presidency of Corazon Aquino and in that time from 1990 to 1991 and President of the Senate Pro Tempore. In 1991 he was one of the twelve members of the Senate ( " Magnificent 12 "), which voted against an extension of the military bases of the U.S. Army in the Philippines.
